Haddon Matrix
The Haddon Matrix of Injury Prevention developed in 1999 marked an important shift in injury prevention. Rooted in motor vehicle safety engineering, Haddon identified a key limitation for safety education -- focusing on the “event” stage and ignoring the physical and social environmental pre-event factors that contribute to injuries Haddon’s Injury Phase by Factors Matrix (social, psychology, physical factors) had a huge impact for advancements in safety engineering because it focused attention on identification and removal of pre-event contributors, and contributed to looking more closely as ‘post’ injury events to better understand ALL the consequences of injury events. Below is an example of a Haddon Matrix for the EOP2 simulation for ATV injury Brad’s Last Ride (Cole, 2008).
